==History==
The Société de Transport de Montréal took over the Société de Transport de la Communauté Urbaine de Montréal (STCUM) in January 2002. This change came into effect when Montréal decided to merge all the municipalities on the island into one big city.
The Société de Transport de Montréal took over the operations from the Société de Transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal which had been operating since June 20th, 1985.

'''''Past Montreal transit agencies.'''''
Several other companies existed on the island of Montréal before the Société de Transport de Montréal. From 1861 to 1886, the Montreal City Passenger Railway Company operated of small network of horse-drawn streetcars. In the 1886, the company went though a restructuring and was renamed to the Montreal Street Railway Company and continued to operate using horse-drawn streetcars until 1892 where the first electric tramway was introduced.

The company once again changed its name change in 1893 becoming the Montreal Island Beltline Railway. By 1894, all the horse-drawn cars were removed from service and the network was transferred to a full electric system. Between 1910 and 1911, the company went though 2 more name changes, first the company was renamed Montreal Public Service Corporation followed by the Montreal Tramways Company.

The first buses were put into service by the Montreal Tramways Company in 1919 but only began to be widely used in 1925. In the 1937, the first trolleybuses started to be used on the island of Montréal. By 1939, the Montreal Tramways Company had 929 tramways, 224 diesel buses and 7 trolleybuses and serving about 200 million passengers annually. Over the years, buses continued to replace tramways though most began to start happening in 1951.

In 1951, a law was passed by the provincial government to transfer the management of public transportation in Montréal to a public organization under the name Commission de Transport de Montréal. The CTM retired the last tramway in 1959.
!Remarks

|-
The end of trolleybus service came in 1966, the same year the Montréal Metro opened for the first time to the public. In January 1970, the CTM became the Commission de Transport de la Communauté Urbaine de Montréal to later re-brand itself again in June 1985 to the Société de Transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal.

|'''Société de transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal'''
The CTCUM began operating regional transit services by expropriation of the private bus company Metropolitain Provincial (1967) Inc. in 1980 but left the market in 1985 to focus on the core territory of the island of Montréal. In 1982, the CTCUM reached an agreement to manage the Deux-Montagnes train service with the Canadian National Railway to continue the operation of the line while the CTCUM and later the STCUM to decide the schedules and fares. A similar agreement was made with the Canadian Pacific Railway to manage the Rigaud train line while CP provided the staff to operate and maintain the trains. On January 1st, 1996 management of the commuter train service was transferred to the [[Agence Métropolitaine de Transport]].

The Société de Transport de Montréal (STM) is the main provider of bus service on the island of Montréal. They provide a day and night service, para-transit service and a metro service.

History

The Société de Transport de Montréal took over the operations from the Société de Transport de la communauté urbaine de Montréal which had been operating since June 20th, 1985.

On January 1st, 1996 management of the commuter train service was transferred to the Agence Métropolitaine de Transport.

In 2002, the name was changed to Société de Transport de Montréal to reflect the merger of cities on the island of Montréal.

Fleet numbering system

The STM had a unique fleet numbering system. The STM's fleet number go as such.

Classics

  • Between 1983 and 1990: The last number of the first 2 digits was the year. (Example: 53-001 = 1983) and the last 2 digits represents the order of when they were manufactured. (Example: 53-001 = First bus made in this series)
  • Between 1991 and 1995: The 2 first numbers represented the year. (Example: 11-014 = 1991) and the last 2 digits represents the order of when they were manufactured. (Example: 11-014 = 14th bus made in this series)

Nova LFS

  • Between 1996 and 1998: The 2 first numbers represented the year. (Example: 17-014 = 1997)and the last 3 digits represents the order of when they were manufactured. (Example: 17-114 = 114th bus made in this series)
  • Between 2001 and 2005: The 2 first numbers represented the year. (Example: 21-273 = 2001)and the last 2 digits represents the order of when they were manufactured. (Example: 21-273 = 73rd bus made in this series)
  • From 2006 to 2009: The 2 first numbers represented the year. (Example: 27-024 = 2007)and the last 2 digits represents the order of when they were manufactured. (Example: 27-024 = 24th bus made in this series)
  • From 2010 to Present: The last digit of the two first 2 numbers represent the year. (Example: 30-247 = 2010)and the last 3 digits represents the order of when they were manufactured. (Example: 30-114 = 114th bus made in this series)

Notes:

  • 27-5XX Series are late 2007 models with new specs. Therefore 27-514 would be the 14th bus made in that series of buses.
  • 28-7XX Series are Hybrid models. These buses received a 7 before the last 2 digits. Therefore 28-708 would be the 8th bus made in that series of buses.
  • 29-8XX, 30-8XX, 31-8XX 32-8XX and 33-8XX Series are Artic models. These buses received an 8 before the last 2 digits. Therefore 30-882 is the 82nd bus made in 2010.
  • 30-4XX and 32-4XX Series are minibus models. These buses received a 4 before the last 2 digits. These buses are used uniquely for the senior shuttles. Therefore 30-405 is the 5th bus made in this series.
