History

Previous Names:

  • Hochelaga Division (November 27th, 1861 to September 4th 1956)

In 1951, the Montreal Transit Commission (MTC) decided it would replace the tramway system by buses, and this happening in a span of eight (8) years. Construction of garages to store the buses was required.

For a couple of years, buses were temporary being stored in the Hochelaga Division, a Tramway garage. Hochelaga Division started it's service in 1861. Located not too far from the current Division, this tramway garage was located on the corners of Du Harve and St-Cathrine, more specifically on Sainte-Marie street (Now known as Notre-Dame. The building was 80 feet by 30 feet and had room to contain 44 horses and 10 cars. In 1892 the CTM must give up some of their property in order for St-Cathrine street to be extended further east. In 1898 the garage is the victim of a electrical fire which destroys the cabin 20 and 62 trams.

Construction on the Frontenac Division started soon after the announcement of the replacement of the Trams by buses. The construction of the garage was done in 2 steps. Beginning with the South side, where 130 buses would be stored started. The construction ended in 1956 and the garage officially opened on September 4th 1956. The North side of the garage opened in 1958. The North side of the garage gave the division room for 62 more buses.

Upon opening the garage, they received their buses, Canadian Car/Brill series. The only problem with the garage was that the garage was one place and their division was a couple of blocks away. That being said, the construction of a second floor started and finished in 1967. This was to be the new drivers lounge and division clerks offices.

Frontenac Division received their name at the same time as the opening of the new drivers lounge which coincided with the nearby metro station. The old division served as a repair lot, until 1974 after the opening of the Plateau Youville. This division still served as a depot for the communication equipment during the expansion of the green line towards Honoré-Beaugrand. Part of the division served as a bus terminal, up until the opening of the metro where the station replaced the terminus.

In 2010, due to the age of the building, a major makeover was to be done. Because of this work, Frontenac Division had their fleet of buses cut by 50%. Construction supposed to last 1 year starting in January 2010 and ending in December. Construction of the garage area is almost 75% done, with new cement and more windows. New garage doors, replacing the old ones are more durable. Currently the construction in the bus area is 75% completed and the drivers lounge just about 80% completed. Frontenac is currently the second oldest garage in Montreal.
