The '''Société de Transport de l'Outaouais''' provides service to the city of Gatineau as well as the municipalities of Chelsea and Cantley in the MRC des Collines. Connections are made in Downtown Ottawa on Rideau Street.

==History==
Transit service in Gatineau started in 1895 and was controlled by the Canadian Pacific Railway. CP Rail operated the service until 1926, where it was sold to Canadian International Paper, a subsidiary of Gatineau Power Company. CIP operated the service until November 30h, 1946.

On December 1st, 1946 the Transport Urbain de Hull was formed and operated the service until the 30th of April 1972 where Transport Urbain de Hull was acquired by the Commission de transport de la communauté regionale de l'Outaouais.

The Commission de transport de la communauté regionale de l'Outaouais operated under this name between the 1st of May 1972 and December 31st, 1990 where the name was changed to the name that is known today. With the name change, also came an extension to the service area into Ottawa.

====Passe-Partout PLUS====
!colspan=2 width=500|Route Range
In 1998, STO intrdouced its smart card system, the ''Passe-Partout PLUS'', becoming one of the first transit agencies to use a smart card system for fare payment. While you could only use the ''Passe-Partout PLUS'' for monthly fares, it offered a few advantages, such as replacement on loss (at a fee of $10 for the card), and you could charge it whenever you wanted to, as opposed to having to wait until vendors had paper passes. Paper passes were abolished in 2004. In order to use the pass on OC Transpo buses, an accompanying receipt is printed which has the ID Number, and the range of days that the pass is good for (ex. January 1st 2012 - January 31st 2012). This receipt must be shown along with the card.

With the introduction of the ''Multi'', ''Passe-Partout PLUS'' cards will cease to be valid in June 2013.
|width=100|[[Société de Transport de l'Outaouais Routes|Rapibus Routes]]

====Multi====
In late-2011, STO began replacing the driver consoles and smart card readers with more modern models. One reason, amongst other things, was to begin rolling out the 2nd-generation of their smart card system (which was later named the ''Multi''). With the introduction of the ''Multi'' in June 2012, STO riders can now use load money onto their cards, which can be used towards paying the ticket fare, or paying the required supplement when boarding an express or interzone bus. In the future, users will also be able to load their cards online, as well as view their balance.

The ''Multi'' will also be compatible with OC Transpo's future Presto system. Presto cards loaded with a monthly pass can currently be used on the STO system. However, as with before, only the monthly pass and transfers will be valid between the two systems. A user will not be able to use the balance on a ''Multi'' card on OC Transpo's Presto system, and vice-versa.

==Accessibility==
*STO never purchased any low floor buses up until 2002. While many other transit systems in Quebec were purchasing Nova's LFS, STO did not believe that they were reliable. Because of this, they continued to order Classics until their production ceased in 1997, and bought RTSs in 2000.

*Even though all LFSs in STO's fleet are equipped with a wheelchair ramp, any units equipped with a telescopic ramp at the rear door  (i.e. 0910 and under) have had their ramps disabled because of unreliability.

*It wasn't until 2008 when STO began guaranteeing low-floor buses on the network, and even then, it was only on certain routes at certain times. During the week, low-floor buses were assigned to all runs that did route 36, 37, 38, and 300 between 9:00AM and 3:00PM. However, all service is provided by low-floor buses on the weekends and holidays. Although high floor buses are now rarely used outside of rush hour, there are some rush-hour runs that start or finish around noon, and the same applies to the late evening. Because of this, STO does not consider most mid-weekday service to be low-floor accessible.

{{Imagebox|http://i.imgur.com/CcVb5.jpg|Wheelchair-accessible trips are shown with a glyph on all destination signs.|180px|right}}
*With the arrival of the third-generation LFSs, STO is now able to provide wheelchair accessible service, but only on certain routes. With the first fifteen units arriving in 2009, STO guaranteed wheelchair-accessible service on routes 36, 37, and 300, but only between 9AM-3PM on weekdays. With the arrival of 27 units in 2010, STO extended wheelchair-accessible service all day on the same routes, as well as adding service to route 38. Wheelchair accessible trips can be identified by the destination signs.

==Current Routes==

* Route Type: *indicates that some exceptions apply. See ''Remarks'' section.

The Société de Transport de l'Outaouais provides service to the city of Gatineau as well as the municipalities of Chelsea and Cantley in the MRC des Collines. Connections are made in Downtown Ottawa on Rideau Street.

History

  • 2: Post-Secondary Students
  • Transfers and passes can be used on the OC Transpo system, and vice-versa. OC Transpo tickets are not accepted on the STO network and vice-versa.
  • Transfers are good for two hours from the time the bus leaves the terminal. Routes 33 and 96 are exceptions.
    • On the weeks leading up to Christmas, four hours transfers are offered on Friday evenings, and all day on weekends mainly to give Christmas shoppers an incentive to take the bus.
